Small Talk at the Bar: Day 21

This is the kind of bar that calls for heels
So my hair is slicked back with Elmer's
I am sexy smooth around the edges
Posing as something glamorous
I sit my damsel self at the bar, perfect posture
French tips and an espresso martini

This is what they call "nightlife"
Where we touch up our lipstick
Suck our tummies in and wonder
If tonight someone will choose us

A man named Daniel has bought me a drink
With his platinum credit and waxed moustache
He's a charmer, and he mentions the stocks

I tell him I love a good vegetable one
With a nice, fragrant mirepoix
I'm not sure if bay leaves really do that much
But onion, yes, the onion is key

Daniel says I'm fascinating
He tells me about the Dallas Cowboys
And asks a lot of questions
Until it's my turn, and luckily
I've been working on my small talk

Do you think we're ever truly forgiven?
Daniel leans close like he misheard me
Do you find God in the way the sun shines?
He laughs, like I've told a wonderful joke
Do you think grief ever goes away?
He must go to the men's room at this point

I go home alone
Perhaps it was my breath

Prompt: "Sawako Nakayasu’s poem “Improvisational Score” is a rather surreal prose poem describing an imaginary musical piece that proceeds in a very unmusical way. Today, try your hand at writing your own poem in which something that normally unfolds in a set and well understood way — like a baseball game or dance recital – goes haywire, but is described as if it is all very normal."
